Today we walked to Fanueil Hall and bought a little christmas tree. Noah carried it over his shoulder back home. People like you when you are walking along with a Christmas tree... and there are so many people wrapped in wool scarfs and puffy coats, carrying coffees and boxes of cannolis from mike's pastries on hanover street. The air was crisp and chilled tonight, but no bitter wind.
but unfortunately we have discovered our chrismas twinkly lights have died, as they waited all year to be used again in a large tupperware container bought at target. so i am going to strong arm noah into a quick brisk walk to get more!
finals are in full swing.... it is hard to temper your energy and time. my next one is wednesday, the battle is to keep your mind clear. I stay away from school because at this ninth hour it breeds fear, which isn't productive. for me anyhow. So the goal is: work hard, be dilligent. Try to prioritize, which is hard to do... where do I start? And rest in the knowledge that I have been consistent all semester. So lay low and trust myself. And God, clearly.
Last weekend was lovely. My friends from college Nate and Casey married here in Boston and many old friends flew or drove for the occassion. We celebrated and again I was reminded of this familial bond formed years ago... so many different things have happened. people have gotten hitched, bought their first homes, and some are having babies. one is a doctor and having a baby any day (dan), another an engineer (andy; he dressed up as Neo from the Matrix one year. actually maybe several years... once dan and i played a drinking game that involved any time andy mentioned or quaoted a direct line from the movie, we drank. we had to discontinue it because drunkeness ensued too early). Rachel and dave live in southern california near LA and are in their first year of marriage, and they are fabulous. Rachel reminded me of the time when we were at Powerhouse (a place where people sang God music) and I told her Dave was excited for their date that Friday; she didn't know they had a date. Chris lives in long island and is getting his masters, dating a sweet girl from ohio; they slept on my floor. aaron, who i always thought would be the one to go to law school (clearly not me) has worked for non-profits like habitat for humanity, and bought his first house. he also has a wife and a baby. john ballantyne, who is one of the funniest men i know, is going to iraq as a pilot. once i wrote a paper for him because he promised me $10, which he didn't give to me because I got him a C. I hadn't done any research, and was full of hubris. Bear, who in college was brilliant and sleepy all of the time, flew from Arizona and slept on my floor. He is still warm and loving and brilliant. Although Chris and Bear are responsible for spiking my drink, making me involuntarily intoxicated. I danced with Adam Gorman--"Gormo"--much of the night, and also Matty B., who looks like he should be living in the North End, so long as he acquires a nice track suit.
Nate was ---rightfully-- over the moon to marry Casey, who is the most wonderful woman. she was a classic, stunning bride. the end of the night we danced like mad, to our established song by bon jovi "living on a prayer" and to james brown. That was the moment I remembered that even though our lives are happening, and our so different than we expected, we still have this base as a family of sorts. our place in the family. that is a safe, nice feeling.
