property law

today was my last property class as a first year law student. Professor Barry Brown (known affectionately to the students of 1A as B. Brown or BB) said goodbye, and told us to keep aspiring to help this broken world with our law degrees.

to keep focused on the goal of helping construct decent lives for others and ourselves... believing in justice and equity and fairness as guiding principles for a society to flourish.

to realize that nothing is fixed and certain, not really. the law is fluid and constructed, and will adapt when required and someone has the clarity to say so.

he told us to keep our creative spirits. to make sure we question the validity of old laws and utility of new ones.

before class i had coffee with tyler and we spoke of many things, but mostly about how hard it has been to nurture the other sides of ourselves in law school... creative, spiritual, philosophical sides.

BB's closing to this monumental year was moving and appropriate. just what i needed, anyhow. So thank you, Professor.

marriage

so one of the more surprising things about being married is seeing yourself through the eyes of your spouse:

When I wake up from a nap, i immediately get up and eat something. preferably sweet, which is the only time I have an exception to my general rule disfavoring deserts. if not sweet, then salty, like tortilla chips. mmmmm.

i can tell if noah is going to be in a good or sour mood based on which coffee mug he selects in the morning.

I am more committed to routine and schedule than I thought. I wake up always directly before noah leaves. I smell his cologne as he hovers over, telling me his plan for the day or asking when i want to wake up. (he sets my alarm. not even sure how to do it.) I wake up and roll over to his side of the bed and sleep an extra hour.

i brush my teeth with warm water. never thought about until noah pointed it out. i do this because dishes are washed with warm water to make them more clean... why not teeth?

tuesday

sometimes, I worry I am not doing a good job.

I really really want to be honest, gracious, generous, courageous.
a kind, funny friend, acute observer, consistent wife, creative and loving. i want to leave something behind. I want to see God. I want to do the best with what I have. I want to live the questions. I want to give good advice, good kisses. I want to be connected. I also want to learn about being alone, and living a bit in silence.

but in my every day life, in the moment, it is impossible to always know that my behavior aligns with these principles... sometime I think "I am standing up for myself!" only to realize later I was being a brat, and short-sighted.

I still wrestle with shame.

p.s. the "biggest loser" is heart warming. despite myself, i love it.

long time no klog!

Today, I had such an unyielding headache that I had to pray for a little mercy.

It was in the front of my skull, and so intense I wanted to throw up and step out of my skin, like a pair of dirty pajamas. I roamed back and forth in my very small apartment, and ended up laying down on the floor, placing my cheek on the cold planks.

but then i fell asleep and woke up and restored! no headache. phew. God is good. and also modern medicine.

It is almost spring-like weather in Boston and that has everyone feeling a bit crazy in anticipation. I am looking forward to the baby green leaves that will come back on trees, and also the Boston Garden as it starts to bloom.

spring also means finals are approaching.... the end of my first epic year of law school draws near.
